Day 1: Cusco to Cloud Forest & Cock of the Rock Sighting (Pona Lodge)

Our 4-day Manu adventure begins with an early departure from Cusco (3,300 m.a.s.l.) in private, comfortable transport. We traverse the beautiful Andean Valleys, stopping to visit the pre-Inca tombs of Ninamarca (Lupaca culture). We then continue to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, where we visit the city museum. After lunch in the high jungle, we begin our descent into the misty Manu Cloud Forest (1,700 m.a.s.l.). This area is renowned for its endemic wildlife, including the rare Spectacled Bear and, most famously, the Peruvian National Bird, the Andean Cock of the Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), which we observe performing its unique courtship ritual. We continue to Pona Lodge (600 m.a.s.l.) for our first night.

Day 2: Alto Madre de Dios River, Wildlife Spotting & Caiman Night Watch (Manu Amazon Lodge)

After an early breakfast, we take a morning walk near the lodge, focusing on fauna observation such as monkeys and diverse cloud forest birds. We visit local tropical plantations, including a Coca plantation, and a picturesque hummingbird’s garden. We then travel to Atalaya Port (500 m.a.s.l.) on the Alto Madre de Dios River. Here, we board our motorized boat, commencing a scenic descent where we look for numerous river birds (herons, vultures, cormorants). We reach Manu Amazon Lodge (450 m.a.s.l.) and take a refreshing swim before lunch. In the afternoon, we explore a local swamp area, an excellent spot for birdwatching, where we hope to see toucans, woodpeckers, and macaws. After dinner, we embark on an exciting Caiman-watching expedition to spot the glowing eyes of alligators along the riverbanks. (Optional: Amazon Fishing activity).

Day 3: Parrot Clay Lick, Hoatzin Birding at Machuwasi Lake, & Night Hike (Manu Amazon Lodge)

The day starts before dawn with a boat ride to the Parrot Clay Lick, a dramatic wall on the riverbank. This is an unparalleled birding spectacle where species like the blue-headed parrot, white-eyed parakeet, and chestnut-fronted macaw gather to ingest vital mineral-rich clay. After the spectacle, we return for breakfast. We then embark on a 2-3 hour guided hike into the rainforest trails. Following lunch and a rest, we visit Machuwasi Lake. We explore the lake by traditional log raft to observe wetland wildlife, specifically seeking the prehistoric Hoatzin bird, and potentially sighting capybaras and different monkey species. After dinner, we take a final Jungle Night Hike to find nocturnal insects and amphibians.

Day 4: Hummingbirds and Return to Cusco

Enjoy a final delicious breakfast while observing the various hummingbirds around the lodge garden. We then board our boat back to Puerto Atalaya, where our private bus awaits for the scenic journey back to Cusco via the Cloud Forest. We will have lunch en route, arriving back in the city around 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
